Home
I have taught English at Freed Hardeman since 1985, especially courses in composition and ancient world literature. In addition I have taught British Novel, King Arthur and History of the English Language, and occasionally other courses. In all my courses, especially composition, I try to help my students to master the dialect known variously as Public English or Standard Written English, and simultaneously to avoid contempt for other less privileged dialects of American English. In most of my classes I try to help students become able to enter textual worlds that are difficult because of their otherness, whether it be the Iliad which is pro-war, or Tarzan which is racist and antichristian or Moll Flanders which has no plot.
Aside from classes, these days I enjoy swimming laps, working with Boy Scouts, talking with my sons about books and movies, and most of all having an after chapel date with the library director, Hope Shull.
