Alan Kinningham is currently pursuing his second career in music education. Recently retired from the Tennessee public school system, Dr. Kinningham is excited to be on the faculty at Freed-Hardeman University. At Freed-Hardeman, Alan teaches courses in music theory, form analysis, and orchestration.
In addition to his experience as an educator, Alan is also an award-winning composer. He has earned both his M.M. (Texas A&M – Commerce, 1978) and D.M.A. (University of Memphis, 1990) in music composition. His composition teachers include Don Freund, Ronald Yates, and Gil Carp. Due to his association with school bands and choirs, Alan has written primarily for larger ensembles, but his philosophy is that a composer should be expressive in a large variety of musical styles and genres.
Alan is married to his favorite first grade teacher, Jan. They have two sons: Drew who is Regional Sales Manager for Humana in Springfield, Missouri, and Bennett who is studying civil engineering at the University of Memphis. The family resides in Covington, Tennessee and attends the Covington Church of Christ where Alan serves as an elder.
